The dog days of August are upon us, and I'm on hold, caught up in health issues and surgical decisions (with in-cisions likely to come). But way back in 2007, I posted a piece that relates to the blog's most recent one (the previous post just below).

Best wishes for your surgery, if you so decide. I thought of you today upon reading that Robin Williams was diagnosed with early-stage Parkinson's before his tragic suicide. I guess that plus his depression and substance abuse was just too much to handle.

thanks, Alan. for a longtime creative genius, a master of rapid-fire verbal merriment like RW, the awareness within of his brilliant mind fading and slipping away will have been terrible and terrifying.

depression? you bet. add the other problems, plus cancellation of his TV show... suicide would've seemed a viable solution.

hoping to stave off any such impulses, I'm examining the efficacy of "deep brain stimulation," a surgical procedure which alleviates and can even delay some Parkinson's symptoms (tremor especially). However, this turns one into a quasi-Frankenstein's monster with wires and electrodes, remote controls and a hole in the skull. Robin Williams might have been a perfect candidate; imagine the madcap antics he'd have made of such matter(s)...
